Uncle PD salutes Canned Heat for crediting Henry Thomas for the sample and inspiration of their 1969 international smash-hit, “Going Up To The Country.” The only part of “Bull Doze Blues” that Canned Heat changed were the lyrics. Henry’s version is still my favorite, and most charismatic, of the two songs.

henry-thomas-100Born in 1874 in Big Sandy, TX, Henry Thomas was part of the first generation to be born out of slavery. He learned to hate cotton, but found solace in songwriting. “Texas Easy Street” was recorded in the mid-1920s and shows how Henry Thomas truly made his guitar swing. This is some heavy blues from Uncle PD to you. Enjoy!

From the seed, to the root, to the vine, Henry Thomas is singing this song about his faith in Christianity. Henry’s signature southern pluck guitar style is a perfect accompaniment to the rhythmic swing of “Jonah In The Wilderness,” as he shows how the blues can be used to express faith instead of the strenuous life that most of his contemporaries led.
