hattie100Hattie’s voice vibrates in many ways, up and down and to the side too. These sounds help me appreciate the finer things in life.

Kansas Joe and Memphis Minnie – “When The Levee Breaks” mp3

minnie-kansasjoe100With his wife Memphis Minnie on lead guitar, Joe McCoy laid down this seminal cut which much later became a hit for Led Zeppelin. A true folk blues original, this song sounds as sweet today as it did in 1929.

Memphis Jug Band – “Jim Strainer Blues” mp3

This is truly archetypical blues song. What happened to Jim, Willy and Lulu by The Memphis Jug Band tracks this tragic tale with music, that you forget the story is so wrong!

Frank Stokes – “I’m Going Away Blues” mp3

Now this is what the blues is all about.  Morose melodies played by a weeping  violin  that stirs up compassion and makes you sympathize with the singer.  Grand recording, heartfelt delivery, powerful song. Enjoy!

Pearl Dickson – “Little Rock Blues” mp3

The guitars really dance all over this classic piece of Americana I ripped from the “Memphis Masters” compilation that I recently re-discovered collecting dust over in my CD collection. Introducing Pearl Dickson, a lost hero and original female master vocalist of blues.

South Memphis Jug Band – “Doctor Medicine” mp3

Appalachian style blues coming from one of my personal faves, the South Memphis Jug Band. This is basically an instrumental jam piece with heavy fiddle and banjo tendencies. Many musicians wish they could pull it off like this 1933 classic! Hope you enjoy.

Jack Kelly – “Red Ripe Tomatoes” mp3

This reminds me of younger days when  they had to use innuendo, so you could use your imagination, to complete the picture. There was subtlety, and a sense of mischief and adventure.
