Henry Thomas – “Bull Doze Blues” mp3

Henry Thomas – “Bull Doze Blues (mp3)

Uncle PD salutes Canned Heat for crediting Henry Thomas for the sample and inspiration of their 1969 international smash-hit, “Going Up To The Country.” The only part of “Bull Doze Blues” that Canned Heat changed were the lyrics. Henry’s version is still my favorite, and most charismatic, of the two songs.

Robert Allen Sisson – “Rhymers Favorite”

Robert Allen Sisson – “Rhymers Favorite” mp3

Allen Sisson was the stage name of North Georgian fiddle master Robert Allen Sisson. Allen Sisson came from a long line of mountain fiddlers and won the Tennessee State Fiddle Champion in 1921. “Rhymers Favorite” shows off Allen’s flare for complex chord progression that eventually landed him in the Edison studios in East Orange, NJ in 1925.

Bill Helms & His Upson County Band – “Roscoe Trillon” (mp3)

The violin melody in “Roscoe Trillon” is quite possibly one of the most pervasive scores in pop culture. Many of you may recognize it as the musical accompaniment anytime we watched a movie or cartoon with scene in it showing old time-y western style dancing. Rejoice because now you have a beautiful, but dusty, digital copy of the original song by Bill Helms & His Upson County Band (recorded circa 1929).

Doc Roberts Trio-”Coal Tipple Blues” (mp3)

Dock Philipine Roberts (April 26, 1897 – August 4, 1978) was born and grew up on a farm in Madison County, Kentucky. He was inspired to play fiddle at an early age by his brother Liebert. Their musical mentor was the African-American fiddler Owen Walker. In 1927, Doc Roberts formed a duo with Asa Martin called Martin & Roberts. The two of them recorded more than 200 sides on 11 different labels. Later on, with the addition of Doc Roberts’ son James, the Fiddlin’ Doc Roberts Trio was formed.
